The Brandon-Evansville Chargers opened the 2019 high school baseball season with a 7-2 home field loss to the Hancock Owls on Thursday.

Hancock took an early two run lead in the top of the first with the help of a couple of miscues by the defense, but B-E responded in their bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own on RBI hits by Gaven Jacobson and Tanner Bitzan.

The Owls added single runs in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th innings and added a couple more insurance runs in the seventh for a 7-2 victory.

“We just didn’t make enough plays defensively and Hancock capitalized on our mistakes,” commented B-E Head Coach Brian Perleberg.  “I thought Zack Haugen pitched well, not giving up any earned runs in his four innings on the mound.  When Marshall Riedel came into relieve him, our defense just couldn’t make the plays behind him and forced us into some long innings.  Offensively, we left 8 runners on base in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, so we were knocking on the door, but just couldn’t get the big hit when we needed it.  We’ll just have to work harder to find ways to produce some clutch hitting.”

“All in all, it was nice just to get out and play a game and be able to see what things we need to work on. Hopefully we got most of rust off today and we can bounce back tomorrow against St. John’s Prep.”

Offensively, the Chargers were led by Tanner Bitzan (2/3, SB, Run) and Keagan Schiele (1/3, Run).   Jesse Perleberg, and Gaven Jacobson also had hits for the Chargers.
