After losing their final two regular season games, the Cardinals won four consecutive games to earn a state tournament berth.
St. Peter (22-6) returns to the tournament for the sixth time and first since 2014. The Saints won just seven games last season. They will face top seed, Minnehaha Academy (26-2), the two-time defending Class AA champion. They have won three crowns since 2013 and have won 20 straight games. The Redhawks’ only two losses this season are to Hopkins, a participant in the Class AAAA field. They will play the 6:00pm game at Target Center on Wednesday night. The eight o’clock game features number four Melrose Area (26-4) against number five Lake City. Melrose Area last made a state tournament trip in 2015 when it won the Class AA crown. The Dutchmen are on an 18 game winning streak. Lake City (26-2) is in the state tournament for the eighth time and first time since 2017. They are a three-time Class A state champion and bring an eighteen game winning streak into the tournament.
The game preceding the Perham versus Redwood Valley game at 6:00pm at Williams Arena is number two seed Minneapolis North (21-9) against Esko (21-9). Minneapolis North returns to the state tournament for the 22nd time in its rich traditions. The Polars won back-to-back Class A crowns in 2016 and 2017. Esko won the consolation final during the 2018 state tournament.
