The Fergus Falls girls basketball team received the number five seed in the Class 3 A State Tournament. The Otters will play number four seed Holy Angels Academy at 12:00 noon on Wednesday at Maturi Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Holy Angels won the Section 3AAA championship and brings a 21-7 overall record into the tournament. They have won five in a row, including a 60-53 win over St. Croix Lutheran in the section title game. They are averaging 66.3 points per game and allowing 54 points per game.
Fergus Falls will take a six game winning streak into the tournament and a record of 23-4. They defeated Alexandria 43-42 in the championship game. The Otters are averaging 62.1 points per game and allow 42.1 points per game to their opponents.
Holy Angels won their section title a year ago and finished as consolation champions in the 3A State Tournament, beating Alexandria 56-46 in the consolation final. Two years ago they finished third in the state tournament, also beating Alexandria by a score of 76-66. The Stars won the 2016 state title in 3AA, beating Winona 51-43 in the championship game. This is their fourth consecutive state tournament appearance.
DeLaSalle (21-5) received the number one seed and will play Hibbing (27-2) at 10:00am Wednesday. Number two went to Robbinsdale-Cooper (20-8) who will face Austin (20-8) at 2:00pm and number three is Becker (25-4) who will match up with Marshall (21-7) at 4:00pm Wednesday.
If the Otters win their quarterfinal round contest they will face the winner of the DeLaSalle versus Hibbing game at 12:00 noon on Thursday at Williams Arena. A loss in the opening round would put them up against the loser of the game between DeLaSalle and Hibbing at 2:00pm Thursday at Concordia University in St. Paul.
