Free Throws Make the Difference as Rockets Upend Lady Knights

The Underwood girls’ basketball team made 22-of-32 free throws in the game, hitting 19-of-25 in the second half to defeat the West Central Area lady Knights by the score of 57-52 in Section 6A quarterfinal round playoff action at UM-Morris on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Josey Bugbee came off the bench to score a game high 18 points, making 8-of-10 from the free throw line, chasing down 5 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists.  Kayla Rocholl was 8-of-11 from the foul line and scored 14 points.  Morgan Evavold contributed a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) for the Rockets, Brooke Hovland finished with 8 points and Ally Johnson had 5 points and 8 rebounds.  Underwood won the battle of the boards 37-34.

 

The Rockets fell behind 16-7 as they turned the ball over twelve times in the first eleven-and-a-half minutes of the game.  They finished the first half on an 18-7 run to take a 25-23 halftime lead. West Central Area scored the first six points of the second half to regain the lead at 29-25, however, Underwood took excellent care of the ball in the second half and cashed in on their free throw opportunities with 19 of their 32 second half points coming from the line.  WCA shot only 13 free throws on the day and made 8 of them.

 

The lady Knights were led by Lexi Bright with 15 points, Ella VanKempen with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks and 4 assists, and Hailey Bennett with 10 points and 5 boards.

 

Underwood (21-5) will play top-seeded Parkers Prairie in the Section 6A semifinals at 6:00pm Tuesday at Concordia College in Moorhead.


West Central area ends their season with a record of 19-7.
