Foss Reaches 1000 Career Points as Comets Lose to Wheaton

By Craig Olson - Fergus Falls, MN

Just as the last second of the first half was ticking off the clock, Olivia Foss of the Hillcrest girls basketball team was fouled.  Foss went to the free throw line with no teammates or opposing players lining the lane and sitting at 998 career points.  She calmly dropped both free throws cleanly through the net to reach the 1000 point milestone and bring the Comets to within 12 points at 34-22 at the half.  The Comets trailed by as many as 18 in the second half and pulled to within 9 points at one time, but came up on the short end of a 65-48 score against Wheaton/Herman-Norcross.

The two free throws gave Foss 14 first half points and she went on to score six more, leading the Comets with 20 points in the game.  She also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists.  Mackenzie Foss was also in double figures, scoring 9 of her 11 points in the second half.  Anna Rasmussen had 5 points and 6 rebounds. Hillcrest made 14-of-23 free throws in the game.

"It was fun to see Olivia score her 1,000 point," said Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark.  "She has so much natural talent, but she has put in a ton of hard work and extra hours in the gym.  She is so deserving of all of her success and I am so proud of her!"

Hillcrest sent the Warriors to the line 39 times and the visitors knocked down 24 of their free throws.  Izzy Schmidt led them with 23 points and four players were just under double digits as Maycee Tolifson scored 9 and Ellissa Rinke, Haley Johnson and Mackenzie Stafford each finished with 8 points.

"We gave up way too many offensive rebounds that led to second, third and fourth chance opportunities for Wheaton," said Coach Clark.  "We had chances to get back in the game, but could never get the momentum to fully swing our way."

The loss was the ninth in a row for Hillcrest.  They will host Lake Park-Audubon on Tuesday and Henning on Thursday.

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross improved to 8-12 with the win.  They are at New York Mills on Monday night.
