Viking Girls Beat DGF in HOL Volleyball Match

By Heidi Isaman - Glyndon, MN

The Pelican Rapids Vikings traveled to Glyndon Thursday, September 13 to take on the Rebels in a conference matchup, which turned out to be a 3-0 win for the Vikings.

“The Vikings were 0-1 in the conference with a heartbreaking 5 set loss to Hawley,” noted Head Coach Heidi Isaman.  “As a result, the girls were determined to put everything out there to get this conference win.”

The Vikings started strong with hitters Ryley Paulson and Riley Berg getting a few large kills at the pins to start the first set.  “We did a great job of serving aggressively to get the Rebels out of system most of the night,” reported Isaman.  “This resulted in the Rebels having to go to their pin hitters most of the time and not getting their middles in as much.  The Vikings struggled blocking their outside hitters but we did our job on defense and we continued to attack.”  The Vikings won set 1 25-14.

Set 2 the Vikings started strong again on the blocking end this time.  Middle blockers Greta Tollefson and Adriana Torres did a great job of finding their middle hitters and slowed them down quite nicely.  The Vikings won set 2 25-15.

The Vikings knew the Rebels would not go down quietly and the Vikings started set 3 not passing the ball very well. “This caused us to get out of system and the Rebel blockers did not have to work too hard,” said Isaman. “The Rebels snuck back in with a few big kills out of the middle and the Vikings did not pass the ball as well.  This gave us less choices to run our offense.  The Vikings lost a little intensity but never really let the Rebels sneak in to take the lead as we were able to close them out in three sets."

Stat leaders for Pelican Rapids were Kaylie Isaman (5 aces, 10 digs), Sarah Thompson (3 aces, 17 set assists, 4 kills, 6 digs), Riley Berg (5 digs, 2 ace serves, 5 kills), Adriana Torres (4 digs, 6 kills, 1.5 block kills), Grace Peterson (4 digs), Ryley Paulson (4 kills, 2 ace serves) and Anna Stephenson (4 kills).
