Battlers Take Comets in 5 Set Little Eight Match

By Craig Olson - Battle Lake, MN

The Battle Lake Battlers survived a five set match against the Hillcrest Comets on Thursday night, posting a 25-18, 22-25, 25-16, 25-27, 15-8 victory in Battle Lake.

“Hillcrest was coming off their first regular season victory and they were ready to play,” noted Battle Lake Head Coach Jenny Roisum. “The Battlers struggled to find rhythm at the start.  We made double digit errors in sets one and two. The Comets chased everything down and kept many rallies going. Set four went back and forth with Hillcrest getting the final kill to push to a set five.  The Battlers came out with confidence to start set 5 and maintained control to win the match.”

Allison Marso finished with 25 kills and 5 blocks to lead the Battlers. Abby Bellig had a solid night with 6 kills and 11 digs. Kate Christensen also had 11 digs while Hailey Smith added 8 digs and was 31/34 serving with 6 aces.  Hayle Knudson dished out 24 assists while Grace Van Erp added 9 assists.

The Battlers play at home on Monday against New York Mills.

Leaders for the Comets were Lydia Juhl (9 kills, 4 digs), Alida Viksoy (5 kills), Hanne Brennhaug (7 kills, 9 digs, 11 set assists), Olivia Foss (4 kills, 6 digs), Mackenzie Foss (23 digs) and Olivia Stanton (13 set assists, 5 ace serves).

“Despite our lowest serving percentage of the season, we pushed the match to five sets,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Debi Foss. “It was a tough, competitive night of volleyball even though we struggled with our passing and had some communication errors. The girls responded well to some adjustments we needed to make and never stopped working. I’m proud of the progress our girls continue to make.”
