Pelican Rapids Boys Golf (Season Preview)

By Doug Bruggeman - Pelican Rapids, MN

The Pelican Rapids Boys Golf Team comes into the 2018 season returning its top six golfers from the 2017 campaign.

Leading the Vikings this year will be returning state Class A participant Joe Stetz who will be a senior.  Stetz is a two year all-conference golfer who advanced to state by being the medalist of the Section 6A tournament in Perham where he shot a 76 & 82 for a total of 158.

Stetz was joined on the all-conference team last year by Sophomore Logan Petznick who finished the Heart O’ Lakes conference season with the Vikings best average.  Petznick’s eighteen-hole average of 86.8 strokes was good enough to place in the top 10 of conference golfers.  Joining Petznick and Stetz on the all-conference team was freshman McHale Korf.  Korf was the team’s most improved golfer last year as he went from an average of 97.0 as a seventh grader to averaging almost 10 strokes better as an eighth grader.

The Vikings did advance to the second day of Section play as a team but were unable to follow up a solid first day effort with scores good enough to advance to state as a team.  The goal for this year will definitely be to advance as a team to this year’s state tournament.  When it comes to the Heart O’ Lakes conference, a top three finish is always a solid goal when you look at teams like Hawley, Barnesville and Perham being in the mix.  These teams are usually highly talented and have been on top of the conference competition for years which makes conference play generally a step up from section play.

Other golfers who are expected to compete for spots on the varsity are letter winners; Alex Nettestad, Kirby Nelson and Levi Johnson.  “My hope is that all the boys put in a solid summer of golf and come back and we see another solid jump in their golf games,” commented long time Pelican Rapids coach Doug Bruggeman.  “I know that over the past few years Logan Petznick and Kirby Nelson have really been ‘course gophers’ and have played a lot of rounds.”   Bruggeman also noted that for both Petznick and Nelson that physical maturity will be a big boost to both of their golf games.

Joining Bruggeman on the coaching staff is long time assistant Jim Christenson
