Lady Knights Top Underwood Girls by Ten Points

By Craig Olson - Barrett, MN

The West Central Area girls basketball team hosted Underwood on Tuesday night in Barrett and the lady Knights were on their game early.  WCA started out on a 17-1 run on the way to a 58-48 win over the Rockets.

Underwood pulled to within six at halftime, 34-28, however, the lady Knights were able to take the lead up to fifteen again in the second half before the Rockets fought back, finishing ten points short.

"This game is a great example of two teams that would not stop attacking each other on both ends of the floor," said WCA Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer. "We came out with the thought to be aggressive and be active on defense.  The girls' mentality fueled a fast start and it carried over throughout the game.  The girls did a great job rotating and anticipating tonight which is something we have been emphasizing for a little while."

The lady Knights were led by Lexi Bright (22 points, 5 rebounds, 6 steals), Brianna Kreft (14 rebounds, 8 points), Ella Van Kempen (7 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists), Amanda Dreschel (7 points, 5 rebounds), Demara Bumgardner (6 points, 4 steals, 4 rebounds) and Hailey Bennett (4 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds, 2 assists).

"We fought back a couple of times, but we had too many mistakes out there tonight," said Underwood Head Coach Brian Hovland.  "Their defensive pressure really hurt us.  You have to hand it to them as they played a really strong game tonight."

Leaders for Underwood were Brenna Tinjum (18 points, 5 rebounds, 6 steals) and Morgan Evavold (10 rebounds).

Underwood will play at New York Mills on Thursday and at Battle Lake on Friday.

West Central Area (3-1) is at Ashby next Tuesday night.
