Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Girls Defeat Minnewaska Area

By Craig Olson - Fergus Falls, MN

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids girls soccer team scored two goals in each half as they turned back the Minnewaska Area Lakers 4-1 on Thursday afternoon in Fergus Falls.

“Minnewaska came out hard and really put the pressure on us,” reported Head Coach Cara Kline. “They scored the first goal to take the lead and that really hypes a team up.  However, we didn’t give up. It was a very defensive game and first year soccer player and sweeper Gracia Larson held the defense strong.  If we hadn’t held our defense, the score would have been very different.  We haven’t come out very strong defensively the last few games, so we worked hard this week on some of our defensive skills and I think it paid off.  The offense scores the goals, but in the end defense wins games.  You can have a great offense, but if you don’t have a defense to win the ball over to get it to your offense, it makes it a lot harder for the offense to get opportunities to score.”

Abbe Monacelli scored the first goal for the Lady Comets, ten minutes into the game, making the score 1-1.  With fifteen minutes left in the half Kevy Konyenebelt scored her first varsity goal to put HLA on top 2-1.

In the second half, Hannah Haegeland scored, followed by Monacelli.  Monacelli’s goal was scored off a beautiful pass from Konyenebelt.

Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids goalkeeper Kellie Burke had fifteen saves.

The lady Comets travel to Crookston for their next game on Tuesday afternoon.
