Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Girls Win 11-0

By Craig Olson - Pelican Rapids, MN

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids girls soccer team erupted for eight first half goals on the way to an 11-0 shutout victory over the Crookston Pirates on Thursday in Pelican Rapids.

The first 3 goals were made by Kristie Thorkildson (9 goals so far this season) followed by 2 goals from Abbe Monacelli (10 goals so far this season). Kristie and Abbe then each scored one more goal in the first half.   With only a few minutes remaining Rita Haugsaur scored the final goal of the half, her second of the season.  Assists in the first half came from Kathleen Martinson, Kristie Thorkildson, and Abbe Monacelli.

The first goal in the second half was scored by Kristie Thorkildson, followed by a goal from Hannah Haegeland, her third of the year, and one more from Thorkildson.  Abbe Monacelli had an assist.

Goalie Eva Rude had 8 saves.

“We’ve had our ups and downs this season and this was a nice pick me up to come and win after a losing streak,” said head coach Cara Kline.  “The girls needed it.  Injuries have hit us hard this year.  We started out strong, but then the injuries started piling up.  Our last few games have been kind of rough with limited subs and varying starting lineups.  I was very impressed with Crookston.  Though we were winning by 8, they didn’t let down, they did some good passing in the second half and really stepped up their game, dominating on many occasions.  However, we were able to hold the score and end the game in a shutout.”

The JV team won 2-1 with goals from Eva Rude and Kevy Konyenebelt.

The next game for the lady Vikings is Saturday at East Grand Forks.
