Wagner headed to state, WCA boys Section Runner-up
By Craig Olson - Benson, MN
The West Central Area boys golf team had another solid showing shooting a 357 and taking home the Section 5A Boys Golf Section Runner-up trophy on Friday. Ortonville won the meet at the Benson Golf Course with a 324. WCA's 357 edged out BBE 361 and Dawson-Boyd 362.
Matt Wagner and Calvin Anderson both of the Knights team and both sophomores had to go to a sudden death playoff for the last state tournament birth. On the first playoff hole, Wagner defeated Anderson to earn the trip to state.
"It was hard walking down the fairway coaching both guys but they were both good sports about it", said Coach Kraig Hunter. "Even though Calvin didn't win the playoff, it was his score today that really pushed us ahead of BBE and Dawson-Boyd to claim the Runner-up trophy. It was a tough situation, because one of them had to lose, but on the other hand it was a good situation because we were guaranteed one of them would be in the state tournament. Matt will represent us well down there."
Wagner will play at Pebble Creek in Becker on June 16 and 17.
Wagner and Anderson led the Knights each firing 84's, Logan Pfingsten shot a 93 and the fourth score came from Luke LaValley with a 96. Other scores for the Knights were Mike Engler 105 and Carson Hunter 107.
The individual medalist was Tanner Drewelow of CA-CGB with a 1-over 73. Zach Hauser of MACCRAY was second with a 74, followed by Jesse Roscoe and Bryn Stock both of Ortonville with 76's. Fifth place went to Corey Tonn of BBE with an 80. Since Ortonville advanced as a team the other two individual qualifiers were Zach McNalley of CA-CGB with an 82 and Wagner 84.
