The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy football team kept things close for one half on Wednesday night as they hosted second ranked Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley in Fergus Falls. A 30 point second half carried C-G-B to a 44-12 victory over the Comets.
Each team scored a first quarter touchdown with Austin Maanum getting the Wolverines on the board with a four-yard run with 8:47 to play in the opening quarter. At 2:27 of the quarter, Hillcrest scored when Dalton Tostenson connected with Matt Fox on a four yard TD pass.
In the second quarter, Jason Montonye hauled in a 33 yard pass from Kade Karsky and Logan Nordly added a two point conversion run to put the score at 14-6 with 9:15 left in the half. At the 4:55 mark, Gene Twedt caught a 17 yard pass from Hillcrest QB Dalton Tostenson and the halftime score was 14-12, C-G-B.
The Wolverines took control with a pair of late third quarter touchdowns as Maanum scored a 3-yard run and Nordly on a 6-yard run. Nordly also scored on a two-point run.
The fourth quarter saw the Wolverines score when John Connelly returned a 48 yard fumble return for a score. Nordly ran in the two point conversion giving the visitors a 36-12 lead. Maanum's third TD of the game, a one yard run with 5:00 minutes left, concluded the scoring.
Hillcrest was held to just 64 yards rushing, however, they threw for 147 yards as Tostenson completed 15-of-26 passes. C-G-B ran for 231 yards and had 264 yards of total offense. Gene Twedt caught 7 passes for 86 yards and the leading rusher for the Comets was Theo Taylor running the ball 16 times for 42 yards.
"We ran into a very good team tonight," noted Hillcrest Head Coach Charlie Brue. "We played well in the first half, but CGB was too much for us in the second half."
